What's happening: Those normally closely held figures came to light via a poorly redacted legal filing that's part of the FTC's lawsuit to block Microsoft's bid for Activision.

Why it matters: Development budgets, which are typically industry secrets, are generally said to be skyrocketing for marquee games — and these numbers confirm the trend toward massive Hollywood-style spending.

They made their dev money back.
They made their marketing money back.
And on top of that they made close to 300 million dollar in profit.

This is one of the most successful highly rated and most talked about single player AAA games in recent history and it’s road to profitability seems very dire.

That doesn’t mean the game isn’t profitable.

It means it’s a very risky proposition to NEED to spend $200+ mill and sell 6m+ copies for a game to break even. Most publishers can’t take that risk.

Games scale their budgets to what type of returns they can make, you aren’t really saying anything groundbreaking. Its the same reason why avengers can cost 200m to make and something like john wick is less than 100.

I didnt say the game wasn’t profitable. There was nothing for me to be wrong about.

Michael Pacthters math don’t make sense from what we know.

Even if they pulled a full $60 per game sold that’s still only 600M total, so i’d like to see his math. Your article doesn’t really explain how he got to that number.
