Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” could break the $2 billion mark in worldwide box office by the end of the week.

The seventh weekend of the latest “Star Wars” movie took in $10.8 million domestically over the weekend to finish in third place, lifting its domestic total to $895.4 million. That’s $125 million more than “Avatar,” the previous record-holder.

Internationally, “The Force Awakens” finished fourth with $12.6 million for a total of $1.09 billion. That’s behind only “Avatar” at $2.03 billion, “Titanic” at $1.53 billion and “Furious 7” at $1.16 billion.

The space saga has hit $1.983 billion globally and needs only $17 million more to make it past $2 billion. It trails only “Avatar” at $2.78 billion and “Titanic” at $2.19 billion.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak, noted that the seventh “Star Wars” movie was able to set a new domestic record in less than three weeks. “Avatar” needed 48 weeks to reach $760.5 million and 72 days to reach $700 million.

“The box office performance of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ shows just how much ‘Star Wars’ is part of the DNA of moviegoers in North America,” he said. “It shows how important legacy can be for a movie because there’s been an incredible enthusiasm for this one.”

The top foreign markets are the U.K. with $176.4 million, China with $121.1 million and Germany with $106.1 million.

I wonder if there is just a small minority of people that are a little disappointed that it didn't do astronomical numbers worldwide. I mean on paper a tentpole flick that is nearing a billi domestically should've have really set the world alight.

It vaporized because word got out it was a soft reboot. Once you get past the nostalgia factor it was just a 7.5-8 at best. And that's maybe even being generous since I'm a Star Wars fan.

i doubt it.

i'm a bit more curious now that they moved ep 8 from may to december. had it kept its May date we would have had 3 star wars movies in a 17 months span if you count the spin off.

With so many star wars movies coming out in the next few years. I wonder if we will see Star Wars fatigue.
