All Star
This is just a theory that i thought up and I'm just curious what other peoples thoughts are on it.
**SPOILERS*
Chirrut probably has the strongest connection to the force than any other character we have seen in Star Wars.
Chirrut actually seems better at sense than most Jedi or Sith! This is possibly because he is not trying to alter the flow of the Force in his environment the way that they do. He is simply riding it like a wave and allowing it to guide him and his actions. This passivity may even work in his favor when it is most crucial, as things like walking through a blizzard of blaster fire without getting shot (or having to block the blaster bolts) implies a deeper, purpose-driven connection to the Force rather than a hubristic desire to control it. Chirrut's mantra is actually a more clear statement of acceptance of the Force's will than we hear even from the Jedi, who are really only slightly less prone than the Sith to try to bend the Force, and the future, to match their own desires.
I think I found a loose connection to Chirrut, The Rebels cartoon and the essence of the force.
In Star Wars: Rebels there is a mystical creature called Bendu, who claims to be the center of the force between the light and darkside. He is a very large almost Ox-like looking creature with bright grey eyes and white pupils. He mentored Kenan and Ezra on the teachings of the force.
Chirrut also has the same eyes. Bright grey with white pupils. Now in most stories of characters that are blind they usually have some sort of cover over their eyes or close them. But Disney made sure you could see Chirrut's eyes and what they looked like.
Chirrut is said to have been a "Guardian of the Whills".
"Who are they?"
"The Guardians of the Whills. Protectors of the Temple of the Kyber. But there's nothing left to protect, so now they're just causing trouble for everybody."
―Jyn Erso and Captain Cassian Andor
Which could be just interpreted as a slight Easter egg based on George Lucas's first interpretation of the Force.
"Originally, I was trying to have the story be told by somebody else (an immortal being known as a Whill); there was somebody watching this whole story and recording it, somebody probably wiser than the mortal players in the actual events. I eventually dropped this idea, and the concepts behind the Whills turned into the Force. But the Whills became part of this massive amount of notes, quotes, background information that I used for the scripts; the stories were actually taken from the Journal of the Whills."
―George Lucas
I think that Bendu is a Whill and Chirrut was a guardian of them and their teachings. I think ancient guardians of the whills broke off and started their own factions and teachings and eventually became the Jedi and Sith. Chirrut doesn't speak or interpret anything related to the darkside or the lightside, just the force.
Bendu could also possibly be blind but so far you can't really tell. But I believe that Chirrut is blind not because he was hurt or injured but because he doesn't need his eyes because they serve him no real purpose in what his job as a guardian was and it also links him closer to the Whills/Bendu and how they view the force.
So only slight connections but I'm really interested in the origins of the force, the jedi, and the sith and since in Rogue One we go to Jedha which is possibly the birth place of the Jedi and meet this character that protected the crystals so we may eventually get more connections and hints at the origins.
