SRS question dbz heads, why are we meant to sympathize with Bardock?

i'm failing to see what actually makes this character worth rooting for.

sure he was thorough as f*ck and a loyal friend to his fellow saiyan brothers and sisters, but at the end of the day he was still a ruthless soldier carrying out the orders of an oppressive ruler. the story even begins with bardock and his gang invading a helpless people and annihilating them. they brag about it even, it's actually how they get their kicks.

now this would be fine if bardock saw the error in his ways and became a changed man by the end of the story, but that doesn't happen. not once throughout the entire special do we see the character actually showing pity for anything he did. if he regrets anything then it's the saiyans getting into bed with freeza in the first place, but the slaughtering and the killing? he's cool with that. the movie never rectifies this and expects us to place bardock as the hero simply off the strength that he is goku's father, ignoring the fact that he is a huge monster.

you could only argue that bardock and the saiyan people got what they deserved.

Bardock was never supposed to be "redeemable", his special was mainly supposed to show what Goku was supposed to become... but Bardock's future sight tried to make Bardock have a different purpose of saving his saiyan race from Freeza but they wasn't tryin' to hear him though
