who has the greater filmography, legacy

both directors i see as being great...both seem to be in the same predicament that their older movies are better then their newer ones

but both are not what i would call classic directors on the level of kubrick, scorsese

both are upper mid tier

who do you think has the greater legacy

They're two different types of directors. Lee is known for making films about social commentary from the black perspective. Scott is known for his high quality sci-fi films. They both had legendary careers for different reasons. Scott's films have been much more successful financially and has inspired a generation of sci-fi lovers. Lee's films were important because they were so honest and raw, yet still had mainstream appeal. He helped launched the careers of some of the most famous black and latino actors today (Denzel, Halle, Wesley, Laurence Fishburne, Martin Lawrence ,Rosie Perez etc) Lee also inspired a generation of minority film makers. So, both Scott and Lee are great.

but most people would say Scott and Lee are not on the level as Kubrick or Scorsese

I think I'd actually pick Spike. Even in his failures he is a far more inspired filmmaker than Scott is and has been in decades.

Did bruh just call American Gangster a classic movie and Robin Hood good? :francis:

Ridley Scott ain't shyt. Been dining out on Alien and Blade Runner for his whole career. He has more trash than good.

What I like about Spike is even most of his failures are kinda failures on his own terms (other than a paycheque movie like Oldboy). Things like She Hate Me and Red Hook Summer are deeply flawed films but they come from a personal place, as do his very best work like Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X.

Scott is just a studio director for hire with nothing to actually say. His films have no heart and soul. Spike is a film maker who wears his heart on his sleeve, and no that doesn't always work out well for him but his films come from a more real place. I see even Scott's best work and I don't feel anything.

Spike Lee. Only c00ns will disagree:troll: nah just playing. i havent seen every one of their films but Spikes best shyt is better. Do The Right Thing Vs Alien or Blade Runner. As much as those last 2 are landmarks, Do The Right Thing is THE BLACK MOVIE that everyone who is concerned abour racism, black identity, social issues etc wants and agrees on. its hard as hell to perforom that feat. plus Spike has mad underrated gems. like He Got Game, Clockers, etc. I just wish he toned down the jazz score.

also, there is nothing wrong with being a studio director for hire. a lot of goats like john ford and howard hawks and shict even hitchcok to a degree were hired guns. you can still say shyt in that format. plus a lot of them were shytted on in their day till those french critics reassed them and put them up on high. thelma and lousie is a woman classic. that had something to say. alien and blade runner. just classic era defining sci fi. i hated gladiator, well not hate but it was just aight.

You serious? Spike is brilliant at his best, but Ridley's a legend right now.

Both have fallen hard from grace but I'd take prime Spike over Ridley. Spike has Do The Right Thing and Malcom X in his corner. Ridley has Blade Runner(I despise Alien) .

Spike wins 2 to 1. Both are overrated like hell though.
