Cook with a Mouth
It looks like Spider-Man Miles Morales is joining the Avengers after this summer's Secret Wars comic book event. If things are indeed as they appear, that means Miles will make the jump from the Ultimate Marvel Universe to the main Marvel Universe, or at least whatever constitutes the "main Marvel Universe" after Secret Wars ends.
The full cover to Marvel's Free Comic Book Day offering -- leaked on ***** late yesterday -- shows Miles as part of the All-New, All-Different Avengers that will form after Secret Wars. The team also features Iron Man (is that Tony Stark or someone "all-new"?), Captain America (Sam Wilson), Vision, Nova (Sam Alexander), Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) and the female Thor. Details on how this team forms and why are unknown, but we expect to find out during Secret Wars -- an event that sees the Ultimate Marvel U and the main Marvel U smashing together.
The cover also reveals the new creative team: writer Mark Waid, artist Mahmud Asrar and colorist Laura Martin.
The inclusion of Miles is notable for several reasons.
The character was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli in 2011 in Marvel's Ultimate line of comics, which take place in an alternate universe. When the Ultimate U's Peter Parker died, Miles took up the mantle in a red-and-black costume. Half black and half hispanic, he was a rare minority character in a leading role using the name of one of the world's most popular heroes. A large fan base immediately formed around the character, and even as Marvel's Ultimate comics line dwindled, Miles' book remained a shining star thanks to the high-quality storytelling.
When Sony and Marvel Studios made a deal to feature Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Miles' name was immediately caught up in the rumor mill as the character who would be the next on-screen Spider-Man. New Spider-Man casting rumors appear to refute that, however.
With the Ultimate U assumedly being destroyed during Secret Wars, the fate of Miles has been a big worry for his fans. It appears that they need not worry, as he will apparently come out of Secret Wars alive and well -- and an Avenger, to boot!
This leaves a long list of burning questions, top among them: Will Miles still have a solo Spider-Man comic, and if he does, will Bendis still write it? Will Peter Parker still be Spider-Man alongside Miles, or will Miles replace him? Does bringing Miles to the main Marvel U in the comics help his chances at being in the movies? We'll report the answers as they come.
