The major theater chains pulled it first so Sony followed suit knowing they'd lose money on the film if no major theater will show it.

This says nothing about America tho. Sony/AMC or any other theater chain is not the US government, they're private businesses that have their own rules of conduct and protocols. They don't have an army at their disposal. They need to decide if it's worth showing the movie even if there's the potential of something happening at a theater and they decided it wasn't. This isn't our government negotiating with anyone
