thought Namco/Bandai published the game?

Sony own actual stake in the company. Bandai/Namco published Elden Ring but Fromsoftware own the actual rights to the IP like Kojima with Death Stranding, despite sony funding and publishing it.

something also worth noting is the anime presence Sony is quietly building for itself. Owning anime distributors, creators and publishers basically puts them first in line for any games developed from them.
It's doubling down on their existing marketshare of big-eyed media, but the next big hit a la MHA/JJK/etc that needs a game that isn't them mass-produced joints they do for the shonens basically going to fall right to their hands.

iirc they have partial ownership of crunchyroll and Kadokawa produces a grip of shyt

I mean... its for the best. Kadokawa is a conglomerate.. they dont really care where the paper is coming from as long as its Japanese. May as well grab it up and get this Bloodborne sequel on the books.

Considering they already own Crunchyroll and Funimation they'd own an overwhelming amount of the backend of anime, manga, and light novel publishing. They'd own Yen and J-Novel club so the majority of English light novel publishing. Kadokawa already owned too much of that. It's pretty clear they want to own anime.
