i just read roger eberts review looking for some answer. i like his theory that its the evil mirror of our world and an evil take on adam and eve.
the thing i dont understand that reviewers keep pointing out is the wrong shoes on his feet. what is that supposed to mean?

Dafoe fits in so seamlessly in this sort of shyt, great performances tho, last qtr of the film is one of the most intense last acts I've ever watched

The main plot is what @Prodigal Syndicate said.
The problem is while the movie was still being worked on a studio exec leaked the entire plot while doing press for the movie. You wasn't supposed to find out the world was created by the devil until the end of the movie.
So Lars Von Trier got pissed off and had to quickly rewrite large portions of the movie. That's why it's so dreamy/abstract/nonsensical instead of flat out telling you what's going on.
