Excuse the title, but there are some places I go to lift weights and it seems to be heavier than other places. For example, where I live now I work out at Gold's Gym. Today I joined the prestigious club of those benching 225 lbs :win:. I was able to get it for 3 times on 2 occasions (still no spotter smh). I been going to the max of 205, which I could get for 10 no problem.

Anyway, when I go back to my home town and go to the old mom and pops gym my brother works out at, sometimes I be struggling to bench 185 :sadcam:. Never benched over 190 there. Now the weights there are old as crap (cast iron), some have started to rust. My brother always telling me those weights are heavier than those at a regular gym, but I say 45lbs is/should be 45lbs. Any of you experience something similar?

Congrats, are you going to keep moving up in weight or stay at 225 and just try to set rep records?

I will probably be on 225 for a min until I got more comfortable with it (maybe do it for 8-10 reps). But I plan on keep going up.

45lbs is 45lbs.

sometimes weight FEELS different because of how its distributed. like if you're benching 225lbs and you have 2 45 plates on one side, and 9 10lb plates on the other side...one side will feel heavier than the other. also if the bar is different than what you're used to. i've never heard of someone having a 45lb discrepancy like that tho.

sidenote: i remember the day i hit 135 on my bench. dont remember 225. will definitely remember 315 once i get there (maybe this year)

I have def seen this. My old gym I could barely get 8 reps off of 185 on bench. 365 was a skruggle on deads. But I was doing the shyt out of weighted chins/dips.

Now everything on a bar is easier (did 3x10x190 yesterday no problem), but weighted exercises are kind of down, suggesting the old place had light plates and heavy bars. This new gym has Iron Grip plates everywhere which are known to be pretty accurate but I can't speak on the bars. I've seen big discrepancies with dumbbells too.

Point of all this fukking rambling is theres def a discrepancy... if a gym has cheap ass plates its a crap shoot (shyt will prob be lighter than it says though)... if not they will be on point

maybe the bar is different. check the weight of the bar to make sure it's standard (maybe they got legit weights but a different type of bar. check also the grip on the bar. maybe one of them has better grip which makes the lift easier.

Usually the barbell is 45 lbs. Some gyms have non-Olympic barbells and they are 40 lbs.

Sometimes the bench is different. The back is wider or narrower. This affects how much you can bench too.

My shyt at home feels alot heavier than when I'm in the gym but it's a mind thing...

The gym is a different atmosphere, don't want to look weak infront of my friends and I know I got a spotter so I go harder.
