Somebody in the comments of that article did some detective work and tried to guess who it was. Not saying it’s right but still
So here’s my theory on the identities. It’s a little unclear if the unnamed actress has won any of the three she’s been nommed for. But if we assume she hasn’t won, and if we eliminate those who are deceased, we are left with the following possibles
Joan Allen
Diane Ladd
Angela Landsbury
Piper Laurie
Laura Linney
Michelle Pfeiffer
Sigourney Weaver
Debra Winger
Now, Cooper says he was at an agency party, and he is repped by CAA, so it seems highly likely the actress is repped by CAA too. And based on the most comprehensive client list I could find of their actresses, only one such person is in the group:
Michelle Pfeiffer
Of course she was only a witness to the insult, and not a party to it. As for the director, there is less to go on, but I have a few ideas. For one, Cooper is tight on details, probably because it would give the person away. I think that he doesn’t mention they have an oscar or a nom, is actually proof that he they in fact do, but he knew it would probably reveal the culprit.
I think the famous director would be a contemporary of hers, because they sound like they’re talking to Cooper with a “kids these days” sort of haughty tone. So the director and Pfeiffer may go back a ways. Looking at the CAA list, there are two directors you could definitely call famous that are her contemporaries. One is Steven Spielberg, but he doesn’t strike me as the sort to say such a jerkass thing.
The other director is highly outspoken, and absolutely would lob such an insult. And not only that, he has a personal connection with Pfeiffer because her big break was on a film he wrote in the early 80s. The director: Oliver Stone.
So that’s my pick: Stone for the director, and Pfeiffer for the actress.
