Reading is multi-layered.

But it starts with phonics/decoding words. That's the foundation.

From there a lot of the more scholarly/elegant stuff happens. But as you can tell from at least one of the teachers - no one wants to teach phonics (and the kids don't want to learn the difference in a sounds from Cat, to What, to Large, to Lane...etc.

Much like you have to memorize multiplication tables before you can really do much with mathematics as a student.

Folks don't like doing the basics.
