I feel ya but I let people add me or seek me out. If you do it the other way around it just makes you look desperate to have your stuff seen. The only time Ive added people I didnt know is if they were important in some way or on the come up. That contact might be necessary in the future.
i host parties from sac to san jose, I recently just started using my facebook forreal (since 2008 I only had people I knew on there) because its easy to see peoples birthdays on the calender and tell them about my event if they want VIP/Bottle service at it. same thing could work for you for photography.. imagine adding 1000 new people on your facebook, thats 1000 potential clients. Even if only 50 of them wanted work from you, thats 50 new people to collect $ from and get referrals from...You dont even need to message any of them, just having 1000 new people look at your work is bound to get you some new business.
