CALIFORNIA, Pa. (AP) — A coroner says a women's basketball player found dead in her Pennsylvania dorm room in January died from a blood cell disorder, not from inhaling chewing gum, as police first believed.

The cause of death for California University of Pennsylvania student Shanice Clark was announced Monday by the Washington County coroner.

The 21-year-old Clark was found unresponsive Jan. 18 and couldn't be revived.

The 6-foot senior forward from Toronto was redshirting after playing two dozen games for the Vulcans last season.

California borough police say a preliminary report from medical personnel indicated that the death appeared to be accidental.

But Coroner Tim Warco blamed it on sickle cell trait, a blood cell disorder that can lead to sudden death in extremely rare cases.

"Don't one of you nukkaz got sickle cell or something "

About 90% of patients survive to age 20, and close to 50% survive beyond the fifth decade.[52] In 2001, according to one study performed in Jamaica, the estimated mean survival for sickle-cell patients was 53 years old for men and 58 years old for women with homozygous SCD.[

I'm familiar with Sickle Cell, but the young woman died from "trait", not actual full blown Sickle Cell. I have trait and have been told by doctors that my trait was becoming a little concerning after a CBC last year. I was overexerting myself in the gym and was told to slow down, I've read articles on sudden death from trait, it's rare, but I've always been skeptical, but researchers are learning more and more about the disorder these days. It's kind of frightening.

Wifeys aunt died from it in 2013 blind and wheelchair bound

Sickle cell aint no joke

girl in the OP only had the 'trait' tho :dwillhuh:. my wife has the trait. i had to take a blood test before we started having babies to make sure I didnt have the trait because if i did there was a good chance our kid would have the actual disease and not the trait.

i had no idea u could die from just the trait.

Your not suppose to die from trait but it can happen especially when you stress your body or put certain drugs into it. They promote it as being a good mutation that gives you resistance to malaria but that's only because your red blood cells are fragile and die before the bug can replicate

yea i started doing my googles and turns out a handful of athletes that had the trait died, but only because athletes put a lot of stress on their bodies. it has to be olympic level working out tho so i have nothing to fear :whew: my wife only dances twice a week.
