I think Goku gets a lot of unjust criticism as a father, especially when you look at other anime fathers in comparison. He left his son the first time because he died saving his son and the world. When he got back he had to jump into a fight immediately to save the world again and while he was recovering his son left the planet. When he healed up he jumped on the first chance to follow his son and saved him again recovered on another planet. The moment he touched down on his home planet he's told someone is coming to destroy the planet in 3 years and he's the difference maker so he spends the next 3 years training with his son and uncle Piccolo. Up to this point he's doing the best he can but shyt keeps happening. After a certain point he gives up on the normal father role.

Him going off to train Uub could be seen as messed up or could be seen as deciding he's not going to force his legacy on his kids. During the Cell saga he tried to pass the torch to Gohan and he almost died. Then Buu came up and Gohan had stopped training, got soft and needed a Mystic power up. In the end that still came down to Goku saving everyone. That may have been his final wake up call that his sons would rather a more normal life and deserve it if they want it but someone still had to be prepared for everything that would keep coming up.
