This is how democracy dies.
Ohio redistricting: Federal judges could pick rejected maps on May 28
TLDR:
1. Ohio republicans passed super-gerrymandered maps that give the Republicans safe districts and the Democrats toss-up districts
2. Ohio Supreme Court ruled against their maps 4 times, saying it was unconstitutional every time
3. A 3-judge federal panel stepped in and the 2 Trump-appointed judges argued, well, yes, the maps are unconstitutional, but we're running out of time before the primaries and disenfranchising voters is even worse than an unconstitutional map....so let's give the Republicans a May deadline to make a constitutional map and if they don't, we'll just let them have the unconstitutional map that already got rejected. They overruled a 3rd judge who said the balanced map created by the two nonpartisan mapmakers hired by the Republican committee should be used instead.
4. The Trump judges said this is okay because they expect the Republicans to fulfill their constitutional duty and complete a better map by that time even though it now benefits them to not do jack shyt and just delay until their unconstitutional map gets approved by default.
So judges can blatantly lie in a decision, and claim to expect an outcome they full well know will not happen, just in order to get their desired partisan political outcome. A federal judge panel can step in and overrule a state's own constitution and own judges in order to force something through even while openly admitting it's unconstitutional.
If this is the wave then we're fukked. Like I've said before, the majority of Americans want change, the only thing that can stop it is party-produced apathy and gerrymandering.
