don't know if anyone here follows screen junkies or movie fights but on their most current show one of the debate topics was "what standalone star wars story would you like to see next"?

no one really took the question seriously (one of them suggested he'd like to see a salacious crumb movie) but this one guy gave an answer so genius i felt i had to post about it.

he talks about the possibility of an IG-88 movie.

for those not in the know, IG-88 was one of the bounty hunters enlisted by vader in TESB to find the millennium falcon. he is seen alongside boba fett and the other bounty hunters. he appears to be a robot/android of some kind and we only see him for about 5 seconds. he has no dialogue.

now before i delve further, let's talk about some of the spinoffs we KNOW are coming and some of the spinoffs we hear MAY be coming.

- rogue one
- han solo movie
- obi wan movie
- yoda movie

does an obi wan movie set before the events of ANH sound pretty cool? one where he's dodging the empire and getting into adventures along the way? yea, kinda... but isn't that just a filler story? does it really EXPAND the universe?

here's the thing... we already KNOW how an obi wan movie is going to play out. we already KNOW how a han solo movie is going to play out. by exploiting the same characters and the same places over and over, i believe you risk SHRINKING the star wars universe instead of EXPANDING on it.

but man, you look at a character like IG-88 and all these questions arise:

latest

who is he? WHAT is he? does he have a creator? was he always a bounty hunter? was he PROGRAMMED to be a bounty hunter? how did he arrive here? what new planets could we visit? what new technology could we see? what is IG-88's world like???

i imagine chappie meets star wars. a gritty sci-fi flick about an android bounty hunter trying to find his place in the galaxy. i don't know about you but to me that sounds like a bold film, and it sounds wayyyy more interesting than just taking popular characters we already know and exploiting them for more backstory.

i could even picture a sequence mid-film where IG-88 is called up by Darth Vader and we get to see that scene from his point of view. that would be incredible.

anyways just sharing with you guys, i know this movie would never get made... but man when the guy came out and said it i really was floored. i really think they would have something here.

if you read all that and you're actually on board... what other "unconventional" star wars spinoffs could you imagine?

:ld:

I'd be okay with this if they already didn't have neglected characters that need development :yeshrug:

Hell, Boba Fett is a fan favorite and he's still never got any real shine in a movie. They introduced Phasma and we have no idea if she worth a damn. :mjlol:

I'd rather they focus in on their new series and new characters rather than revisiting old ones.

see i don't think boba fett needs any more story because i fear if we learn anything more about him it will damage how we perceive him. he's cool precisely because he's mysterious and says few words. i don't WANT to know anything more about him.

and yes i know the prequels already fukked that up but that's pretty much fan-fiction to me.

This is why I'm not feeling the idea of a Han Solo movie. We don't always need to know every detail of a character's life. Sometimes the suspense of what could have happened and what they could have been through is way more interesting than anything the filmmakers could actually tell us.

It's still a shame Boba Fett got punked so easily in Jedi though. Taken out by a blind man with a stick like...

But I honestly don't really see a need to explore further any of the characters from the original trilogy as much as I think time should be spent filling in the gaps of what transpired between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens while giving some shine to characters introduced in TFA.
I think that would be the best way to expand the universe.
