Cliff Notes
- W.E.B. Dubois released The Souls of Black Folk in 1903. The Chapter "Of the Black Belt" details the day to day realities and hardships of African Americans living in the Black Belt region of the South post slavery and post Reconstruction . He explained that the hardships involved the exploitation of Black people AND BY WHOM.
- Decades and 2 World Wars later, after being funded and celebrated by jewish groups for most of his career, Dubois gets pressure from some powerful jews to alter the next printing of the book. They want the removal of references to jews exploiting Black sharecroppers from 5 pages of the book.
- Dubois resists, and then agrees and he cops pleas about the reason he's doing it. He had testified before Congress years before the book was published, saying the same things and naming the same people. ...but he makes the excuses that "maybe my info was faulty"
- References to jews in the pages of the 1953 edition of the book are replaced by the words "immigrants""foreigners" and "Americans"
Later editions of the book have the original wording but contains introductions making excuses for Dubois telling the truth in the first edition of the book.
