Some theorize it's because it's easier to justify mentally for because same-gender fighting is seen as "okay" and isn't taken seriously by law enforcement. This usually leads to an increased likelihood of repeated incidents in a situation where the abused feels trapped as they are not taken seriously by the rest of the community.
