US Credit Rating Cut by Egan-Jones ... Again

Published: Friday, 14 Sep 2012 | 3:43 PM ET Text Size By: CNBC.com With Reuters

Ratings firm Egan-Jones cut its credit rating on the U.S. government to "AA-" from "AA," citing its opinion that quantitative easing from the Federal Reserve would hurt the U.S. economy and the country's credit quality.

The Fed on Thursday said it would pump $40 billion into the U.S. economy each month until it saw a sustained upturn in the weak jobs market. (Read more: Fed's 'QE Infinity' — Four Things That Could Go Wrong)

In its downgrade, the firm said that issuing more currency and depressing interest rates through purchasing mortgage-backed securities does little to raise the U.S.'s real gross domestic product, but reduces the value of the dollar.

In turn, this increases the cost of commodities, which will pressure the profitability of businesses and increase the costs of consumers thereby reducing consumer purchasing power, the firm said.

In April, Egan-Jones cuts the U.S. credit rating to "AA" from "AA+" with a negative watch, citing a lack of progress in cutting the mounting federal debt.

Moody's Investors Service [MCO 43.82 0.07 (+0.16%) ] currently rates the United States Aaa, Fitch rates the country AAA, and Standard & Poor's rates the country AA-plus. All three of those ratings have a negative outlook.

Doesn't mean much

every agency has a negative outlook on the united states.

The United States can only rely on its military might for so long. One day we are not going to have the power projection to "incentivize" countries to accept the dollar as a reserve note. That's the only thing protecting us from the fate of Germany or Zimbabwe.

2) You say political stability since 1776, then what about the civil war?

There's already been a thread about QE3 here and nobody avoided it. What are you even talking about? What would anybody avoid this for?

Who wants to hold on to a currency that is being purposely devalued by its issuer?

Would you take money from me if I told you it would be worth less tomorrow?
Would you lend money to me if I told you I would pay you back with less money?

The only way I could do that was if I Debo'd my way into a contract. That is, I threatened you with my status as the neighborhood bully. We can't be the world bully, and then try to also have an universal health system and a welfare state. Something has got to give.
