Gain weight, not only purely muscle, but fat...in order to be able to lift heavier things. Something that has to do with fat being able to handle heavier loads or something like that so the muscles will grow to accommodate its new found limits?

Depends on your situation. I think in general, it's to build and strengthen your muscles while maintaing a healthy body fat percentage.
