They shut down. When Skynet became aware, its prime directive became destroying the human race. Once that is done, its purpose is done, and the world would have no humans or sentient machines, just animals again like 2.5 million years ago.

That's unlike us, where after we achieve our mission of getting laid or eating, eventually we find something else to do. That's how we're programmed. Skynet wasn't programmed like that, tho.

The Terminator story is a commentary on the dangers of our increasing technology. If we don't watch out, we will destroy ourselves thru our hi tech.
