and it was open mic comedy night. news of mandela's passing was making its away around the nation, so it was natural that attendees to last night's comedy session heard about it. this was an open mic night that had us vote for the people coming to the stage, and each table had a name. of course, most of the those in the bar were white, too. anyway, some of the tables had such hilarious names as:

RIP Morgan Freeman

Who Cares About Mandela? At Least Morgan Freeman Is Still Alive

Who The Hell Is Mandela?

Morgan Freeman Died Tonight?

now....am i being overly sensitive? i just found the names of these tables to be slightly offensive and borderline racist, given mandela's accomplishments within the historical context of black south africa's fight for independence.

Comedy really has no bounds, but I wouldn't have gone there.
It's one of those "too soon" things.

They should have just taken a moment to acknowledge Mandela's passing and moved on with the show.
But to focus on Mandela and create an act or theme around it...that's distasteful.

our table name had nothing to do with mandela. we didn't participate in the tastelessness. and i didn't do anything. i just shaked my head whenever i heard the names announced. shockingly, there was a light skinned ethiopian looking fakkit at one of the tables.
