One of my complaints is that today producers have:
-abandoned drums breaks
-abandoned scratching as a major component of any track
-abandoned the SP-1200 in lieu of software et al given its much easier to use and lest cost intensive, but doesn't really encapsulate that certain sound, the sound of early 1990s NY.
As Damu says, "this is how it should be done"
This like the majority of my work is composed entirely through audacity; chopping up samples, filtering samples, chopping drums, etc. Can't get much better than beat making for free. Is also obviously a WIP as I am the most half-assed beatmaker ever.
