Party Over Here: Will You RSVP for More of Fox's SNL Alternative?
By Ryan Schwartz / March 12 2016, 8:54 PM PDT
In a promo for Fox’s new sketch comedy program Party Over Here, executive producer Paul Scheer (The League) says he wanted to create a show “that felt like the live comedy that’s going on in New York.” Co-creator Andy Samberg probably should have informed him that there’s already a show like that, and Ariana Grande is currently hosting.
Be that as it may, this pre-taped alternative to SNL borrows more from Inside Amy Schumer than it does from The House Built By Lorne Michaels or the now defunctMADtv. Starring Nicole Byer (Girl Code), Jessica McKenna (The Hotwives of Las Vegas) and former SNL scribe Alison Rich, Party is indeed a worthy experiment for Fox, which prides itself on starring three female comedians and not 15 white male costars. It’ll have to try harder, though, if it ever wants to become a pop culture staple, as a series of sketches about having sex with various desserts and farm animals just won’t do.
Lo and behold, our picks for best and worst sketches:
BEST (BY A MILE): Women’s Suffrage
After finally gaining the right to vote in time for the 1920 presidential election between Warren G. Harding and James M. Cox, Hortense Coleridge says she’s too busy to go to the polls on Election Day, and claims one vote won’t make a difference. When she reluctantly shows up to cast her ballot, it turns out she’s at the wrong polling place and should’ve registered to vote months ago. Whoops!
HONORABLE MENTION: Mistaken Identity
Beauty and the Beast‘s Belle returns home to tell her father about the wonderful night she spent consumating her relationship with Beast. The only problem? She never quite made it up to Beast’s castle, and may or may not have had sex with a beloved family pet.
WORST: Yogurt Love
No one loves yogurt as much as the actors in a yogurt commercial… except for Alison, who seems to be on the verge of having sex with Jessica’s snack. If that isn’t strange enough, just wait until you see what Nicole does with a steaming slice of pie.
MOST AWKWARD MOMENT:The (Disapproving) Lonely Island
In an attempt to appease executive producers/mentors The Lonely Island (Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone), Nicole, Jessica and Alison agree to crap their pants as a means of gaining their approval.
