So apparently they way most of us subtract is "old fashioned"

Ran across this on Facebook, apparently it's how some kids are being taught math these days.

Maybe I'm getting old or something, but this doesn't really make much sense to me...anybody familiar with this "method" of doing math? At best it seems like walking around the block to go next door.
