Fifteen young men who authorities say terrorized residents of the Glades for more than a decade as members of the Jackboyz gang appeared in court this morning, a day after being charged with crimes ranging from racketeering to attempted murder.

With about a half dozen deputies surrounding them, the men filed in a line into the courtroom at the Palm Beach County Jail and sat in a front row, waiting for each to be called up.

Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Janis Brustares Keyser ordered each held in lieu of $500,000 bail - except Charles R. Coney, Denard Jones Martell, and Frederick D. Williams, all of whom faced more serious charges and whom the judge ordered held without bond.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and State Attorney Michael McAuliffe announced Wednesday the pre-dawn round up of several of the alleged gangsters and the charges intended to dismantle their organization.

The sweep is the latest in an ongoing attempt to round up the county's most violent and pervasive gangs.

"We started out with 10. This is number 6," Bradshaw said about efforts to dismantle gangs.

The Jackboyz have been around in "one form or another," operating primarily out of Belle Glade, for 10 years, according to the state attorney's office.

The gang may be best known for its alleged ties to the 2008 murder of Pahokee High football star Norman "Pooh" Griffith outside a youth dance in Belle Glade.

Investigators allege that the gang ruled its territory in Belle Glade using money from drug sales, robberies and theft of everything from store goods to cars.

The gang, made up of boys and men ages 13 to 25, claimed as its territory the intersection of Southwest Avenue A and 5th Street as well as nearby streets, investigators said. Those arrested ranged in age from 20 to 26.

"The organization is notorious for displaying guns to their victims and also committing drive-by shootings in and out of Belle Glade against rival gangs," Capt. Jack Strenges Jr. told a gathering of reporters and leaders from Pahokee, Belle Glade and South Bay.

Meanwhile, Pahokee Mayor J.P. Sasser said his residents were experiencing a newfound freedom.

"Certain parts of our community were being held prisoner. This will send a message when you do see a crime committed you can come forward. I think this will embolden people to come forward," Sasser said.

By investigators' accounts, the Jackboyz territory has been the scene of 17 homicides, 75 attempted homicides or batteries, and 55 shootings in which no one was hit since the beginning of 2007.

The 15 men have committed a combined 67 previous offenses throughout the county ranging from resisting arrest without violence to first-degree murder with a firearm, according to McAuliffe.

Some of those charged were already locked up on other charges. Wednesday morning, SWAT members picked up the rest, hitting four addresses in Belle Glade and one in Pahokee, Strenges said.
