Dear NYPD: ‘Just Following Orders’ Is Not a Good Slogan

Hundreds of off-duty cops showed up in the Bronx on Friday to protest the indictment of corrupt colleagues on ticket-fixing charges. Among the slogans on their signs: "Just Following Orders." Doesn't that sound... familiar?

Is it a song lyric, or something? Or a commercial jingle? Oh—wait—I remember now! It's the way Nazi officers excused their war crimes. That would make sense! If there's one thing the NYPD is really good at, besides spying on Muslims, framing black people, beating protesters and raping women, it's public relations. After all, what better way to refute charges of systemic corruption and abuse of power than by borrowing your defense from Nazis?

Oof. The ticket-fixing indictments were unsealed yesterday, bringing to light 1,600 criminal counts ranging from the minor (sweeping tickets under the rug) to the major ("helping a man get away with assault"). It's a major scandal, though in most ways it confirms what people already knew about New York cops:

The case, troubling to many New Yorkers because of its implication that the police officers believed they deserved special treatment, is expected to have long tentacles. Scores of other officers accused of fixing tickets could face departmental charges. Some officers have already retired. Moreover, the indictments may jeopardize thousands of cases in which implicated officers are important witnesses and may be seen as untrustworthy by Bronx juries.

Seen as untrustworthy by Bronx juries? Why would cops be seen as untrustworthy, when NYPD is so good at building rapport in the community? Just listen to these heartwarming accounts of the scene at yesterday's rally!

Particularly disturbing, the official said, was a news report that said some officers chanted "E.B.T." at people lined up at a benefits center across the street, referring to electronic benefit transfer, the method by which welfare checks are distributed. The people had apparently chanted "Fix our tickets" to the officers.

[...]

When the defendants emerged, many in the crowd burst into raucous cheers. Once they had gone and the tide of officers had dispersed, the street was littered with refuse.

Didn't the Nazi's say the same thing after they lost the war and were on trial for running concentration camps.

i rmb watching carlin's history hardcore and he was talking about the nazis " following orders"...these nazi soldiers really never had a choice..what would happened if they disobeyed orders?? their families would also be sent to concentration camps for extermination..this is diferent..these cops actually had a choice and they made a conscious effort to profit from their unethical actions..

Shifting the blame to their bosses. They arent zombies, they're men and men of integrity do things with integrity not demonic things, because someone told them to. It reminds me of something my mother told me when i was a child.

"if so and so jumps off a bridge, will you follow" Lets remembers these pearls of wisdom from mom dukes, friends.

yep, and that's the first thing I think of when I hear "just following orders"

it's such a predictable responce, and that's one of things that makes it such a stupid choice for a slogan

Same. As an above poster said, in the context of the Nazi's it at least makes sense because many of the soldiers didn't even understand what was going on until it was too late and then they were threatened with death if they didn't comply. These cops have a choice and are only doing these things so they can make money for themselves.

well the thing is "just following orders" was also the defense of 'high-ranking' nazis in the Nuremberg Trials

I assume they were under the same threat even though they obviously had more "resources" to possibly escape the regime. They also had more knowledge about the Nazi's which would make them even more likely to be killed if they tried to defect. Didn't Hitler go on a murder spree and took out a lot of his top lieutenants after his first assassination attempt, or am I thinking about Stalin?

Either way. These cops have PLENTY of choices.

come on breh. Hitler wasn't one evil guy that managed to control a nation with scare tactics. people were enticed by all that nationalistic crap and probably really thought they were on some sort of righteous path. I know it's seems kinda crazy given our modern perspective, but it happened...

Didn't mean for it to sound as if I was justifying their behavior in anyway. I'm just saying, even if Hitler's top lieutenants wanted to get out and were morally opposed to what Hitler was doing, they were met with the threat and fear of death (themselves and their family). These cops aren't going to be killed if they refuse to follow an unethical order.
