I don't remember too much about Superman: The Animated Series, but the first season of Justice League was ridiculous with that. Seemed like every time they wanted to establish a new threat, they'd have it beat up Superman. I think the second season fixed that, though. He straight up beats Darkseid one-on-one.

The funniest thing about this is in the last episode, when the newly-resurrected Darkseid invades the Earth. Superman gives this speech how he's always had to hold back, but now he's going to going to fight Darkseid with all his strength... Superman gets about two punches in before Darkseid turns the tables on him and he has to be saved by Lex Luthor.

It's either he's too powerful so he's boring or not powerful enough. Same thing happened in the comics. Personally I think he's best stories took place when he got de-powered. I think he's only worthwhile stories in his pre Crisis days were the Alan Moore ones
