Didn't think it was great when it first came out but it's re-watch value held up really well :ehh:

I personally find it overrated. What separates it from all the other haunted house jump scare fests of that era? The home movie parts were kinda well done but other than that it's your typical new age generic horror.

Amazing first half with the tension build and soundtrack. @Demon is pretty underrated as far as horror villains go…his presence was unsettling in each scene. Hawke also did his thing.

It got whacky for me in the second half with the ghost kids though and I never bothered with the sequel after hearing the complaints. I still love it overall for the atmosphere it built.

Looking forward to what Derrickson and Cargill have in store with The Black Phone.

Its usage of the soundtrack during the snuff films and the mood it creates is what separates it from the generic pack, IMO. If I want to be genuinely spooked, Sinister is an auto-watch with the lights off.

I don’t find it overrated but I do think it fell a bit flat after what felt like the film was building up to something special in the beginning. I loved the ending however. It’s tragic and yet it still fits with the story.
