Whether we like it or not, we have to admit that the personality and likeability of a candidate matters a lot when it comes to electoral success.
As a lefty, I still want to believe in my heart of hearts that a strong, issues-based platform that offers something real to average people who have been left behind would be the most effective pitch.
But then I wake up
So with a eye to future national elections, what kind of candidate do dems need to look for?
I think a white male is obviously ideal. Sometimes I think someone like Gavin Newsom would have the right kind of profile, but then I think he would come off as too much of a "pretty boy," and then there is the whole "coastal elitist" thing. A Newsom type might have worked in the olden days, but not now. The JFKs of yesterday would probably also be seen the same way.
I think what is needed is someone from the south/midwest who is very charismatic, tall, handsome (but not too handsome ... should have some ruggedness), around 45 years old. I can't think of anyone like that who exists though ...
