‘Simpsons’ Creator Matt Groening In Talks with Netflix For Animated Series

Matt Groening is looking to jump back into the animation business. The creator of “The Simpsons” is in talks with Netflix to develop an animated series.

Details of the project are being kept under wraps. Netflix is understood to be considering a two-season order of 10 episode apiece. That could be prompted by the long lead time needed for animation production. A larger episode order upfront would allow Netflix to better amortize the production costs. It’s unclear if an outside production entity is involved with the project.

Netflix declined comment. A rep for Groening could not immediately be reached for comment.

Groening has not been too active in TV since “Futurama” wrapped its 15-year run, spread across Fox and Comedy Central, in 2013.

“The Simpsons” has become a cultural institution since the characters premiered in 1987 as interstitials on Fox’s “The Tracey Ullman Show.” The series bowed in 1989 and was recently renewed through its 28th season in 2017, making it one of TV’s longest-running entertainment programs.

In 2012, Groening donated $500,000 to UCLA to establish the Groening Chair in Animation at university’s School of Theater, Film and Television. He also committed to a yearly $50,000 donation to help students produce socially conscious short films.

I saw this and my first thought was: How about making your current animated sitcom better before making another one...and then I took off my simpsons hat and said "cool, hope it's dope"

:leostare:Impossible breh. Simpsons GOAT run ended over a decade ago.

He's:flabbynsick:, but hopefully this new project has fresh funny new characters in a more diverse town or wherever.
Plus Netflix will allow him to tell a whole story in a season. :ahh:

Not impossible breh. The good thing about the simpsons is that the characters are always there, therefore all you need is dope writers to do dope shyt with them which happens every now and then, the lego episode being the most obvious one of recent memory. The characters and the world doesn't get old but the writers and the showrunners are the ones who can easily make it great again

:leostare:I swear we had this debate before breh. You were right then and you're still right though.
The writing now is trash.:yeshrug:I laugh more watching Family Guy.
Peter Griffin does way more stupid stuff than Homer at this point. They need to make Homer stupid again.
My Netflix can't wait to eat though.:banderas:

Homer is stupid lol they need to make him less stupid but that's me. The problem with the simpsons now is its lost its heart. Like it's ceased to be a character first show or a show that actually really wants to mine emotion, which is what made it great before. It could have something insane like homer meeting michael jackson in a mental hospital but couch it with lisa's birthday and bart needing to do something nice for her or lisa buying bart's soul from comic book guy and playing it straight rather than being stupid about it. Which is why you're right, it can still be dope every now and then but its hit or miss which is the problem

Yup people don't even watch but they say it fell off after on

Simpsons recent stuff is good, everybody just regurgitates the narrative that after season 10 or so its been horrible. Chances are netflix gives him an outlet for more raunchy comedy he couldn't put on primetime network tv like the simpsons

Matt is cool... but David X Coen is the real dude over there. He was the reason Futurama > Simpsons... (asside from the cast of course).

So I hope he is onboard in a head writer capacity again. :lupe:
