I am a recent graduate with a economics degree, i had a contract position at fidelity investments for 8 months after graduating but that ended in December and I have been working at a restaurant since then. I got a job offer to work for a financial institution checking customers credit who are applying for auto loans. I told myself after the interview that I would not take the position if they offered me it because it looked horrible. Well when they offered me the job they offered me a 50,000 which for the coli is chump change :rudy: but for me is way more then any other entry level position I have seen is offering.
My question is I have an interview with credit Suisse A large investment bank for two positions that deal with derivative markets which I find way more interesting and unlike the credit job is a very young work environment. Now I have to decide if I should take the job I was offered by wednesday which is the day I have the interview for the credit suisse job. The Credit Suisse job pays 10,000 less and I am not sure if I would get it. I don't know if I should take the position that pays more but might make me miserable at work. Or take the risk of trying to get the IB credit Suisse position that pays less and I am not guraneteed to get a job there.

Anyone ever taken a position at a company for less money because they thought they would enjoy the work more. :why:

Ask the people offering if you can have until Friday. Let them know that you really are interested in the job but you have to take some time to talk it over with your family/significant other, etc. Also, when you go in for the interview, let them know you have another offer but you are waiting to get back to them because you wanted to go through this interview.

So, I'm assuming you are young and just getting out of school and feel free to correct me if I miss the boat. My advice is to take the job doing credit checks for auto loans. Coming out of school in today's economy, 50k is nothing to sneeze at. As someone who hires people all the time, you are playing with fire. You are not hamstrung to his job, do it until you can find the opportunity you're looking for in the long run.

I'd take it. Why can't you still go to the interview, you said you have to accept it that day but does that have to be your start-day?

This. Might as well interview. If they want you, they'll make a quick decision.

No I would rather wait tables in the mean time until I find something that I am interested in doing then take a job just because of the pay in a field that might bore me to death with no real great opportunity for advancement. I come from a family with no money so thats why the 50k makes me take a second look cause I have never experienced money like that before

Bro I was in a similar situation but kind of reverse . I was working retail in commission and didn't want to take a beginning job in my field now I wound up years later starting from the bottom while my gf is supervisor of the position I want . You could use the experience maybe bro it'll help you later possibly when interviewing and applying :manny: just my two cents i regretted it

No , I would not have to relocate. I just made a lil excel sheet to weigh and factor what is important about the two jobs and they came out pretty much even :leostare:
Just looked at the offer letter again and it says monthly bonuses are likely :smugdraper:

but being locked in an office with average 40 year olds reviewing ppls credit to purchase a denali :merchant:

Apparently the credit suisse job has alot of recent college grads and plenty fine females :wow:

but you may not get the job though. i once was offered a job as a junior graphic designer at some local signage company and i turned it down for a chance at a paid internship at disney. the interview at disney went well and the hr rep and creative director liked me and my portfolio but ultimately i didn't get the internship. i missed out on a job w/ decent benifits that was basically mine for the taking over a long shot.

Again, a lot of people understand what you are going through and asking for a small extension is your best option. Credit Suisse holds weight. A lot of people here are speaking from experience but also from fear. The fear of not getting that other job, the fear of not being able to put food on the table. Etc. You need to walk into that CS job like its already yours. If you need help with interviewing, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Clear communication with your current offer + Intricate understanding of your next interview = win/win.

This is from a guy who had multiple 6 figure offers throughout my law school interviewing process as well as a bunch of job offers throughout my life.

Nothing is promised but there are plenty of ways to tip the odds in your favor.

Basically. I think he needs to ask for an extension and basically front like it's for family reasons or something. Making sure a significant other would be down for it or whatever and then feel out the Credit Suisse offer.
