Should clinching/holding be punished more?

How should clinching in boxing be handled?

  • Take a point away every time a fighter holds.

Too much clinching is allowed in boxing, it's what allowed PBF to be an ATG. If he wasn't able to hold so much, he'd've been food numerous times in his career.

Referees should give a warning the first time you clinch in a round. Then every clinch after that results in a point taken away in that particular round. Then the next round, you start with a warning again. Fighters will stop holding their opponent's arms, and thus we'll see more action.

Who's with me on this?

No how would boxers with bad reach win fights:beli:?

Clinches help reduce height and arm length advantages I will say though heavyweight boxing has way too much clinching where dudes aren't even punching.

One clinch per round then it's points? Of course not. Why would you take away one of the most natural defenses to another person punching you?

Clinching is a part of the sport and a skill in and of itself.Try to clinch someone up that knows what they're doing and see how quickly you get hit with a 4 piece combo. Try to get away from an efficient clincher and see how quickly you get gripped up.

And I dislike seeing these arguments that place alll the emphasis on the practitioner of the style (Whether that be clinching, "running", "not fighting" or whatever other non-meathead skilled tactic). It takes two to tango. Those Floyd opponents should have adjusted to his tactics and avoided clinches.

Some refs don't allow much of it, those guys I like. But at the same time I like the refs like Tony Weeks who let anything go. I want either a clean fight or a filthy one.

I'd like it to be up to the refs. Warning and points if excessive but it's a great tool sometimes and it's a physical part of the sport that can be utilized in one's advantage.

I'm okay with clinching not with excessive holding.

Clinching and to fight in the clinch is a part of boxing. Actually I like it sometimes cause those situations can bring out the dog of fighters, they have to rely more on their natural skills not the studied ones cause they don't really learn to amateurs how to fight on the inside in a clinch.

I don't want it so extreme that every clinch after the first is penalized but I'd definitely like to see refs step it up more in regards to enforcing. I'd like to see more warnings when it appears a fighter is holding just to hold and not using it as a means to fighting on the inside.
