This has been kind of...urking me lately. I've noticed that we always have groups of people around when discussing the events of "what happened" regardless of what took place (violence, drunk driver, hit-n-run, kidnapping etc) on the local news. I often see white families releasing statements on the families behalf while they grieve in peace but black people seem to not care or FULLY understand the consequences of speaking to the media and making statements. As we have seen, many of these statements will be used AGAINST them in the court of law or if it even goes to trial in some instances. The mom is always the only one speaking (further solidifying woman only household stereotypes in our communities) and there is never much mention of the father. Stark contrast to everyone else when you get a chance to see the dad, mom, and maybe even the kids sitting at home on the couch giving an interview. I'm sure much of the media bias has led me to feel that it's only us acting and looking crazy on the news when our loved ones are hurt but damn!! Comb your hair, speak proper, talk about him/her and stop with all the religious talk! I know im asking a lot but i just wish we'd take heed to how our image could be used against us and also our statements we make to the media in times of tragedy...

as someone who works with a local media outlet and attempts to talks to black families on the regular after something tragic happens, it'd be better if black fams talked MORE. Control the story. We're gonna run it regardless and we either run what ever bullshyt the police give us which is going to be negative cause they're shytty humans and don't give 2 shyts, or we can run with what that family says. Believe me every reporter wants to run with what the family says but black folks look at you like you trying to do them dirty most of the time when you walk up on them with a camera.
