Shaft, New Line Cinema's reboot of the 1970s blaxploitation action movie, has added Cliff “Method Man” Smith to its cast.

Samuel L. Jackson is reprising the role he first played in the 2000 film update directed by John Singleton, while Jessie T. Usher has been cast to play Shaft's son, who, after long being estranged from his father, finds himself teamed up with his dad. Regina Hall, Alexandra Shipp and Richard Roundtree also star.

Smith will play an old friend of John Shaft’s (Jackson) from the neighborhood.

Tim Story is helming the pic from a script by Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow. John Davis and Barris are producing, while Marc Fischer and Ira Napoliello are executive producing.

The new film is slated for release on June 14, 2019.

The first Shaft movie hit theaters in 1971 and starred Richard Roundtree as the private detective who is hired to rescue a Harlem mobster’s kidnapped daughter. The film was a box-office hit for MGM, earning $13 million, and the theme won the Oscar for best original song. The film was added to the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2000.

There were two follow-ups, Shaft’s Big Score (1972) and Shaft in Africa (1973), along with the 2000 sequel, also called Shaft, which starred Jackson as the nephew of the original John Shaft.

Smith, who is also known for his music career along with his acting work, was recently seen in David Simon and George Pelicano’s HBO series The Deuce and hosts the TBS comic rap battle competition series Drop the Mic. He is repped by CAA, manager Shauna Garr and attorney Amy Nickin of Frankfurt Kurnit.

Richard Roundtree played the iconic private detective searching for a crime lord's kidnapped daughter in the 1971 original film.

Then Samuel L. Jackson took over for the 2000 remake of Shaft as a New York police detective and nephew of the original John Shaft.

And both actors were joined on the set of the upcoming film reboot in New York City on Saturday by Jesse T Usher, 25, who will play the third generation of the famous character.

The trio wore matching brown trenchcoats over gray turtleneck sweatshirts for the scene.

All three wore dark shades, but only Jackson and Roundtree wore black leather gloves, with Survivor's Remorse star Usher going gloveless.

The Pulp Fiction star played an NYPD detective - as opposed to the original private eye take on the character - in the John Singleton directed film.

Regina Hall to Co-Star in ‘Shaft’ Sequel With Samuel L. Jackson (EXCLUSIVE)

Regina Hall to Co-Star in ‘Shaft’ Sequel With Samuel L. Jackson (EXCLUSIVE)
Justin Kroll
Regina Hall has joined the cast of New Line’s latest installment in the “Shaft” franchise opposite Samuel L. Jackson and Jessie T. Usher, sources tell Variety.

Hall will play a former love interest of John Shaft and the younger Shaft’s mother. Alexandra Shipp and the original Shaft, Richard Roundtree, are also on board.

Tim Story is directing from a script by Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow. Barris and John Davis are producing. Marc Fischer and Ira Napoliello are exec producing.

The movie follows Usher, a nerdy FBI agent who, after his friend dies under suspicious circumstances, launches his own investigation, reluctantly enlisting help from his estranged father — the legendary, stuck-in-the-’80s-but-still-cool John Shaft.

MGM’s 1971 blaxploitation film was based on Ernest Tidyman’s novel and directed by Gordon Parks. John Shaft was portrayed by Roundtree, who navigates mob neighborhoods in New York City to find a mobster’s missing daughter.

The film was a major success at the box office, pulling in $12 million on a $500,000 budget. Isaac Hayes’ “Theme From Shaft” won the Academy Award for original song. Parks and Roundtree also teamed on “Shaft’s Big Score” in 1972 and “Shaft in Africa” in 1973. “Shaft” was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2000.

The movie is set to bow on June 14, 2019.

Hall most recently starred as a lead in the comedy hit “Girls Trip,” which is the highest-grossing comedy of 2017 with over $115 million in the U.S. She is repped by ICM Partners and Principato-Young Entertainment.
