We're on the blood path now
Who did you guys empathize more with, Ann or Cynthia? I felt bad for both girls, honestly. But if I had to choose one, I choose Cynthia. It's more than apparent that Cynthia fukking her sister's husband was more about getting back at Ann than it was the act of fukking John. Now of course the act in itself was vile, but I think the complexity of Cynthia's character makes the situation a lot more unique. It seemed like everyone in the movie looked down on Cynthia, criticized her, belittled her and often thought of her as just a wild hoe. I can understand where she came from though because it seemed like her character was extremely oppressed by the sheer "goodness" of her sister and her sister's principles. On top of that, it seemed like her character had mother issues too (it's brought out several times during the film: once when Ann rebukes her for only wanting to get her mother a birthday card for her birthday, and then another time when Ann threatens to tell their mother about her masturbating in front of Graham). So you have this woman who never gets to be herself without someone criticizing her, who's brother in law treats her like an outright whore and straight up disrespects her whenever he wants, and who never can do anything right without feeling like she will never be her sister's equal.
I think that scene with Graham where she explains where her sexual curiosity first began was the most poignant scene in the film (literally almost made me cry too). The look on her face when she asks him if she can take off her panties, as well as the look on her face when she closes the screen door and looks at him when she's leaving, was one of the most haunting looks I've ever seen in cinema.
Anyways, what do you guys think about their dynamic?
