Serious Question: What's the difference between...

What's the difference between killing a bunch of people in a theater because you think you are the Joker or blowing yourself up and killing a bunch of people because you think it will appease your God?

Why is one largely considered a matter of mental illness and the other not?

I don't consider religious bombings as that different from most political fighting.. plenty governments massacre unarmed civilians the way terrorists do

Sure, but you could argue though that one is a war over resources, land, power, "self defense" or world stability--all tangible things.While the other has to do with appeasing a God they have no proof exists.

I put religious suicide bombings at the same level with the people that carried out My Lai which involved US soldiers killing a bunch of civilians because of "protecting freedom".

Sure, I think the top tier guys want power, but I am talking at the individual level.

The poor, uneducated guy who is the pawn and believes he is doing it to appease Allah, Jesus, or Vishnu.

Actually thinking you are joker is worse, because that guy actually lost touch with reality. Whereas, the pawn was brain washed and taken advantage of cause he was told he was suffering because of his oppressors.

Martyr? Those guys family get money, though.

Clearly, its not religious at all, just a power play. They are not getting people who have something going for them to blow themselves up. how can you prove that they actually literally believe in this mind set in the sense of it being the actual catalyst for the action and not a whole host of factors..group think/peer pressure even minus any "brainwashing" can be a muhfukka,most people will buckle in their beliefs when surrounded/enticed by a crowd regardless of the cause or setting..

btw i'm naught saying that it doesn't play a small part but i'd venture to say that economic status/oppressed vs the oppressor mind state plays a bigger role..

the unfortunate thing when it comes to martyrs&cults and the such is that you can't test them scientifically ex post facto..

A lot of those guys want something to believe in that they don't care if its all mumbo jumbo. You go from being a nobody, to Osama treating you like you are important is enough to get any sucker to blow themselves.
