Serious question: What do you tell someone who recently lost their mom?

My parents are both alive, I can't relate to that so Idk how to approach it.. 
Got a homie who lost his moms last March and his pops last October, just invited him over for a blunt, both my parents are still alive but i know its a cold world when you out here by yourself
I tried that but her and my mom are awkward as hell together

I personally lost my mom last year and look at nikkas like
when they say this. People mean it out of respect but it never comes off good. Don't say shyt, theres nothin you can say. Just keep their mind off it.ThumpDaddy

I have plenty of friends that have lost their mother and I just don't really say anything about it unless they want to talk about it. Other than that, I just keep it moving.
