Scientists make wheat genetic code breakthrough

LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists from Britain, Germany and the United States have unlocked key components of the genetic code for wheat, helping to create varieties that are more productive and better able to cope with disease, drought and other crop stresses.

The identification of around 96,000 wheat genes, and insights into the links between them, comes just two years after UK researchers published the raw data of the wheat genome.

"Since 1980, the rate of increase in wheat yields has declined," said one of the project leaders, Keith Edwards of the University of Bristol.

"Analysis of the wheat genome sequence data provides a new and very powerful foundation for breeding future generations of wheat more quickly and more precisely, to help address this problem," he added.

The research was published in the journal Nature on Wednesday.

"Bread wheat is a complex hybrid, composed of the complete genomes of three closely related grasses. This makes it very complex and large; in total it is almost five times bigger than the human genome," said another of the project's leaders, Klaus Mayer of Helmholtz-Zentrum Munchen.

"Because of this, we took a novel approach to analyzing the data and we have been successful in turning it into an accessible and useful resource that will accelerate breeding and the discovery of varieties with improved performance - for example better disease resistance and stress tolerance."

Jan Dvorak of the University of California, Davis led the U.S. contribution to the project.

The study was welcomed by other scientists.

"As we struggle to confront the increasing challenges of population increase, land degradation and climate change that are contributing to food insecurity, it will be vital to understand the underlying genetics of staple crops like wheat," said Denis Murphy of the University of Glamorgan.

"The newly published wheat genome will be a vital resource for researchers and crop breeders across the world in their efforts to maintain global food supplies."

I know some people here are paranoid and/or think genetically modified food is the devil or whatever, but this is actually pretty good news. The world hasn't gotten it's act together in terms of population growth and it's expected to reach 9-11 billion (around 2050) before it stabilizes, and who knows what kind of effect climate change might have on food production.

If this makes crops more resistant to bad weather it could end up helping to prevent food shortages and famines.

those who are paranoid about it don't understand it.

so using a tool to implant insecticides/pesticides and insect genes and fish genes inside of this wheat gene is the solution??? :comeon:

Its one thing to crossbreed wheat plants...but its another thing to add elements that have no reason to be in there in the first place........

If those elements can increase the crop yield without deleterious effects to wildlife/environment/humans, then what's the problem?

Study says genetically modified corn causes tumors, but other scientists skeptical about research - HealthPop - CBS News

The two-year study, which was published on Sept. 19 in Food and Chemical Toxicology , revealed that mice who were fed either a diet of Monsanto's genetically modified maize sprayed with Roundup - the company's brand of weed killer - or drank water with levels of Roundup similar to what is found in U.S. tap water were much more likely to die and at an earlier age, in addition to other health problems.

Well the same scientist will have a "Rat Reality Show" for the next rounds of experiments, so the entire world can see the entire process and decide for themselves...........I'm no scientist....but in all my days.... I HAVE NEVER EVER heard a scientist attempt to debunk another scientist by saying the rats were predisposed to cancer......ever........:youngsabo:..............Can they recommend some rats NOT predisposed???

Oh yeah set your DVRs......................

GMO Rat Reality show on the way.........since this rat experiment got so much flack from "esteemed scientists and organizations" saying it was a fraud, or the methodology was flawed, or the rats were the kind more susceptible ANYWAY to cancer, so on and so forth....

The scientist who did this study have decided.....

"Rat Reality Show: Russian Scientists To Broadcast GMO Experiment"

Replacing the inside of a jelly filled donut with RAID. nikkas ready to eat it up though long as the crop survives. Sad.

Happens ALL the time. It's called 'Peer Review'.

fair enough, but like I said......can they recommend some rats not "pre-disposed"..... and if they use the recommended rodents, what will the "peer review" say then??

Plus, the rat reality show will be "peer" and public reviewed...which is an awesome idea...more experiments should be like that.

Sooo is this misleading " unlocked key components of the genetic code for wheat," ?
Is the only way to move in the direction of solving our upcoming too little food problem (if that's even the case).. to not breed different strands of wheat, but to add chemicals and other animal DNA? How do we respect a person eating choices if we do this? IF someone is a vegan, they will have to starve in the future.

If not chemicals n sh1t that could kill us.. then what? What is a solution?
