The Biblical story of the global flood and Noah's Ark may be more than just a story, an archaeologist tells ABC News. Robert Ballard, the underwater archaeologist who located the wreck of the Titanic, has a team at the Black Sea and thinks he's found proof that the Biblical flood was based on historical events: An ancient shoreline, 400 feet below the surface. His team carbon dated shells from that shoreline and estimated that a catastrophic flood took place around 5000BC, which would put it in line with experts' estimates of Noah's flood.

His theory: Much of the world was covered in ice 12,000 years ago, and when it began to melt, there were floods all over the globe. And there may have been "a mother of all floods," as Ballard puts it, in the Black Sea region. "The land that went under stayed under," he explains. Ballard's team has found ancient pottery, structures that appear to be man-made, and even an ancient shipwreck with human bones inside. He doubts he'll ever find "Noah's Ark" itself, but for now, a guy in the Netherlands has completed a full-scale replica of it.

yup I think a lot of people think it might have been a cataclysmic event from the mediterranean region

I think it's probably the kinda fear that's very common across cultures though so this kinda story can come up independently in different places

Pretty cool, it's logical that there was mass flooding.
I can't say I've read much about the subject.

It would make since, but scientifically i dont see how it could have happend all of a sudden and never receded. This climate change thing prolly has been accelerated by humans tho, id bet that 7,000 years ago earth was more icy any day.

Guess you needed to hear it from an atheist. :russ:

Don't get too excited. There are many flood myths in the Middle East, many of which predate the Bible. All this means, if his hypothesis is true, is that all those stories were based on a real event, not that the specific Biblical flood story happened- it didn't and you don't need a scientist to tell you that.

North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
If the world was covered in water literally then mt. Everest was covered as well. Think about how much water it would take to raise sea levels around the world 20k feet. It would take longer than 40 days of rain.

Let's say it did happen. Where did all that extra billions of gallons of water go? Did it evaporate. Then there is the impossible feet of fitting 2 of every animal in that ark. It simply wasn't big enough.

At best that story was exaggerated.

:what: I thought this proves moses parted the sea. Talk about hitting a needle in a haystack. Who would've thought it was possible to have floods on the earth :comeon: the bible has taught me such profound things :lawd:
