“There’s no doubt that, following the Iranian threat, there exists an unspoken understanding between Israel and Saudi (and most emirates),” says Danny Rubinstein, an Israeli journalist and author. “There’s understanding because there’s a common enemy. And this understanding will continue to grow – without any official or public signs.”
But the signs are everywhere. The London Sunday Times recentlyreported that Saudi Arabia had already given Israel permission to use its airspace to launch attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites, if necessary. Saudi and Israelis officials have denied this. Similar reports circulated in 2010.
Meanwhile, the Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who is not a member of the government but is an influential Saudi figure, suggested in an interview recently that Iran was a bigger threat than Israel. ”The Persian empire was always against the Muslim Arab empire, especially against the Sunnis. The threat is from Persia, not from Israel,” he was quoted as saying.
That quote was picked up by the Arab press, tweeted and shared hundreds of times (below).

The reaction was not limited to the Saudi street. Intellectuals and academics – with enormous followings – posted messages reflecting a common thread: that Iran was a greater enemy than Israel. “The danger of Israel does not exceed the occupation, it is a limited danger,” tweeted Sheikh Ali Al Rabieei in early November. “Iran is a danger to land, honor and religion, and it will not be satisfied until it occupies land like Israel and changes religion.” The Sheikh, an influential academic, has some 187,000 followers on Twitter.
