The Disney-backed streamer has picked up an eight-episode limited series exploring the life of the entertainer and told through the lens of his racial identity and relationship with the Black community. Elijah Kelley, who has collaborated twice already with Daniels, will play Davis Jr.

The untitled series is based on Wil Haygood’s book, In Black and White: The Life of Sammy Davis Jr., and will chart his rise from childhood stardom on the vaudeville stage where he became one of the most famous Black entertainers of the 1950s and ’60s (and the only Black member of Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack). At the same time, he spent most of his career surrounded by controversy and ridicule — over his affairs with white film stars, his 1960 marriage to Swedish actress May Britt, his conversion to Judaism, his closeness to the Kennedys (and later Richard Nixon) and his problems with alcohol and drugs

I don’t like Lee Daniels but Elijah Kelly is mad underrated so I’ll watch it for him. Also I liked the Wonder Years Reboot Daniels had a part in making so maybe he’s on a up turn.

I mean why wouldn’t U get lee daniels when It comes to some c00ning. Sammy was a cool cat on his lonesome but frank and dean stayed making him do c00n shyt.

I just got done listening to a podcast series about Sammy (and Dean Martin) and you’re right about Sammy.

They treated him like a puppet, he smiled, took it, and didn’t seem to complain about it, even when they weren’t around.

Really complicated cat. People throw the word ‘c00n’ around too much, so I’ll leave it at ‘complicated’.

His autobio good read if you interested btw. His time in the military fukked him up basically, he decided he wasn't gonna let white folks do him so dirty like that again unless they were paying him for it. Singing and dancing is what he knew because thats what his parents did so thats what he used.

Yeah that was all in the podcast. The white boys fukked with him and bullied him because he was black and smaller.

Then he got allowed to sing in military shows and people left him alone and some people showed respect, so he basically vowed to sing and dance until everyone respected and loved him.
