Be it for injury or for illness... this really isn't the time to be stripping people of championships because outside circumstances prevent them from wrestling.

I think there’s a lot more to this than we know about and it’s not that simple.
It's just a prop. A tournament for it gives guys on Smackdown that aren't involved in the tag title turmoil or Bray/Braun a chance to shine in a tournament and a crowning moment for whoever ends up winning it. Might help get that person over while Sammy's out.
Once Sami gets back, you've got your potential PPV-worthy angle right there.

Agreed with that first post, but is this the first time they’ve actually used to 30-day defense rule in ages? I feel like Alexa Bliss and Dean Ambrose both held titles where they weren’t defended for months at a time

They should just have the tournament to decide an interim champion.
