Prairie View A&M Prez Issues SCATHING Letter As She ABRUPTLY Resigns From The HBCU | Roland Martin
One of the nation's leading HBCUs is experiencing a shake-up in leadership. Ruth Simmons, president of Prairie View A&M University since 2017, announced on Friday that she would resign at the end of February over differences with Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp over hiring during the rest of her term as president.
Simmon's letter announcement is four months earlier than her expected June 1 resignation date.
Simmons has been a substantial part of the universities growth. Under Simmon's leadership, Prairie View grew its endowment by 40%, increased fundraising, boosted financial aid, and received a $50 million donation from billionaire MacKenzie Scott to the university. Simmons was supposed to serve until the incoming president, Tomikia LeGrande, the vice president for strategy, enrollment management, and student success at Virginia Commonwealth University, assumed the role on June 1. Texas A&M Board of Regents will appoint an interim president to serve before LeGrande starts in June; however, Simmons will remain at the university as a professor and continue to help with fundraising and leadership development.
On Friday, Roland Martin spoke with Texas State Representative, Jarvis Johnson about Simmons' abrupt departure from Prairie View A&M.
