russia has already lost more soldiers and equipment in Ukraine than they did in Afghanistan. even if they managed to keep the territories they currently occupy, much of is is completely destroyed except for crimea. how does putin sell the development of that land to the russian people when 20% of russian homes don't even have plumbing? where will he get the money to do anything with that land? they gonna rely on china to replace the EU as their major customer but how long will that last when china is moving towards green energy faster than anyone else.

russia was getting over 100 billion dollars annually selling oil and gas to the EU, once this conflict is over they will develop ukraine's oil and gas industry to supply the EU especially since they are closer. Putin knows this is exactly what is going to happen especially since the west will have a major energy partner in ukraine that isn't a part of OPEC. ukraine will be able to afford paying it back and become a major customer of U.S defense companies.
