Unfortunately, the difference between Nixon and Trump is that Nixon didn't have a pervasive personality cult.

Nixon also didn't have a massive, privately-owned network of propaganda outlets that constantly reassure his supporters that their house isn't on fire.

Hell, those same outlets have convinced Trump supporters that the house fire is making their home's value go up.

People could see more objectively in those days because news wasn't politically polarized as it is today (though it was polarized in other ways).
