Author of Trump-Russia dossier wins libel case in US court
Suit against Christopher Steele by three Russian oligarchs thrown out by judge
Luke HardingTue 21 Aug 2018 11.02 EDT
The former MI6 officer Christopher Steelehas won a legal battle in the United States against three Russian oligarchs who sued him over allegations made in his famous dossier about the Trump campaign and its links with Moscow.

The oligarchs – Mikhail Fridman, Petr Avenand German Khan – claimed that Steele and his intelligence firm Orbis defamed them in the dossier, which was leaked and published in early 2017. The Russians own stakes in Moscow-based Alfa Bank. All are billionaires.

On Monday, a judge in the district of Columbia, Anthony C Epstein, upheld a motion by Steele to have the oligarchs’ case thrown out. Epstein did not determine whether the dossier – which a furious President Trump has repeatedly dismissed as “fake” – was “accurate or not accurate”.

But the judge concluded that it was covered by the US first amendment, which protects free speech
. He ruled that the oligarchs had failed to prove a key part of their case: that Steele knew that some information in the dossier was inaccurate, and had acted “with reckless disregard as to its falsity”.

The ruling is a piece of good news for Steele, who has maintained silence in the face of a mountain of abuse from the president and his enraged supporters. Earlier this month, Trump called Steele a “lowlife” on Twitter and described the dossier as “phony”, discredited” and paid for by “Crooked Hillary”.

The big story that the Fake News Media refuses to report is lowlife Christopher Steele’s many meetings with Deputy A.G. Bruce Ohr and his beautiful wife, Nelly. It was Fusion GPS that hired Steele to write the phony & discredited Dossier, paid for by Crooked Hillary & the DNC....

August 11, 2018
The Russian lawsuit concerned one of 17 memos sent by Steele between June and October 2016 to Fusion GPS, an intelligence company based in Washington DC. Fusion investigated the then presidential candidate Trump’s alleged links with Moscow. It in turn sub-contracted Steele.

One confidential memo reported claims that the Alfa Group businessmen had a close relationship with Vladimir Putin. It alleged that Fridman and Aven gave Russia’s leader “informal advice” on foreign policy, especially about the US, where Putin tended to “distrust” information given to him by his officials.

The memo also claimed that in the 1990s an Alfa intermediary delivered “illicit cash” to Putin when he was deputy mayor of Saint Petersburg. It further suggested that Putin was able to “exploit” as a lever the oligarchs’ “lack of investment in Russia”, even though he personally wasn’t “bothered” by it.

Alfa denies these claims.

In January 2017, the website Buzzfeedpublished the dossier, igniting a political firestorm. More than a year later, the oligarchs sued Steele in Washington DC. In March, Steele responded with a motion filed under “anti-Slapp” legislation. He argued that the Russians were trying to shut down a legitimate subject for public debate.

Epstein’s judgement on Monday was, in places, withering. The oligarchs had argued Steele did not enjoy first-amendment protections because he was British rather than American. The judge said this was “ironic” given the fact the billionaires had Russian and Israeli citizenships, and had gone to a US court seeking redress for their grievances.

Of the dossier, the judge said that it “plainly concerns” an issue of public interest – whether the Kremlin interfered in the 2016 US presidential election. He wrote: “The Steele dossier generated so much interest and attention in the US precisely because its contents relate to active public debates here.”

Steele’s legal battles are not yet over, but Monday’s ruling is a significant victory.

He still faces a libel claim in London brought by a Russian technology businessman, Aleksej Gubarev, who appears in the dossier. Gubarev owns Webzilla, a Florida-based web company. The Russian is also suing Buzzfeed in Miami. Steele recently gave video evidence in connection with the Buzzfeed case.

Yes. Tariq did Russia Today because MSM wouldn't talk about police brutality.

Now granted, I knew and most of you all should have known RT was state TV before then, just like Al Jazeera, but this was before the election and before MOST people knew how dangerous RT was. The stigma wasn't there.

They dont keep up with this shyt like we do. And if he did that to discuss police brutality because it was offering him a platform, thats not him being an active agent. The goal of RT was to mimic mainstream press outlets and it gave many people platforms to do so. Some were blatant propaganda, some were legitimate pieces of news content.

Stop acting like Tariq Nasheed is a Russian agent. He, like many other black hardliners don't see voting as a means of progress UNLESS it targets black voters. Yes, I know its shortsighted, but black pessimism is a real thing ( The Afro-Pessimist Temptation ) has to be overcome and its something I distinctly disagree with him on.

Don't do that same shyt where you equate BLM to merely Russian bots :francis:

:snoop:

No. He didn't. Thats means anyone who was on RT or Al Jazeera got used. Stop doing that zero-sum shyt. He LEGIT believes that. Thats not some new stance he's had. Didn't take propaganda for him to think voting doesn't help.

If you're not black, I don't see how you don't see this in the community. This is a rampant view and its one I wish he didn't ignorantly share, but it is, what it is.

The Native American thing will be used against her. It's stupid, yeah but again, a thrice divorced, multiple bankruptcy, sexual predator is in the WH right now. America can't be trusted to know what's in its best interests.
I like Warren for the same reason I like Hillary. She’s policy focused. Unlike Bernie. They push specific targeted bills that seek to change things. They’re not just talking.
