Yeah people are stupid but this shyt sounds so perfect and given the very nature of agencies like CIA operate based on a lot of secrecy and deception doesn't make it too absurd to wonder.
I'm not even mad at the CIA if they did it. When it comes to this intelligence shyt I expect these people to operate in shady if not outright illegal ways.
I'm not making a judgment call one way or another but I find it hard to believe they happened to find child porn when other attempts at charging the guy failed if that Reddit post is to be believed. It's fairly convenient.

Remember that story a few months ago where that Russian dude fleeced them out of some money claiming to have the pee tape and information related to who leaked the CIA tools. The CIA source said they didn't even want the pee tape stuff and they paid him 100k up front for information about the tools. They wanted to find this leaker bad .
