Some of the wire tapping he got hit with were 8-9 years old, they knew how he was moving. To hit him with all that now = they need him

The charges against Manafort & Gates are federal, when they refer to Washington DC, or Alexandria, it refers to the Districts of federal court.....
Often, if defendants cooperate, prosecutors will give them a break on the finances, and they will be left with something, to take care of the family, or to keep one house. They will have to seize his assets, that can be tied directly to the crimes, but there is some leeway there, to leave him with some walking around money.
If he doesn't cooperate, they will move to break him, and show no mercy, all the accounts, his families accounts, his families homes (if they are tied to financial crimes), have they filed a bill of forfeiture yet? That is a list of everything they are seeking to seize as part of the case.
If the case goes to trial, Manafort's only move is getting the more serious charges out, so a jury convicts on the less serious charges, but not the ones where has the most liability for time. Like Skrelli. The superseding indictment just raises the odds, that he won't walk away with probation or 6 months.
Everyone, most everyone has a number, when it comes to prison, what you can and what you can't do. Manafort isn't signing a deal for 10.
The talks of Gates plea agreement breaking down is probably about how much time they were asking for.
